A two-time Olympic village, right outside your door

High Peaks trailheads, big-mountain skiing, Olympic sliding tracks, and a sporting calendar that runs all year — all within a short walk or drive of your suite.

On Foot

Adirondack High Peaks Hiking Guide

Lake Placid is the front door to the Adirondack High Peaks — 46 mountains over 4,000 feet that draw hikers from all over the world.

Where the trailheads are

Most High Peaks trailheads sit within a 15–20 minute drive of the village. Adirondak Loj / Heart Lake (off Route 73) is the busiest, with routes to Algonquin, Wright, Marcy, and the Macomb Range. The Garden trailhead in Keene Valley accesses the Great Range. Cascade and Porter, right on Route 73, are the most beginner-friendly.

New York State now requires parking reservations at some of the busiest trailheads during peak season — check current requirements before you drive out.

Start small: Mt. Van Hoevenberg

Want High Peaks–style views without a High Peaks–length day? The West Trail (2.2 mi one-way, from South Meadow Rd) or the East Trail (1.8 mi one-way, ~30–40 min from the Olympic Sports Complex) reach a 2,940-ft summit with panoramic views — a great warm-up or family-friendly first hike.

Know before you go

The High Peaks Information Center at ADK's Heart Lake Program Center, next to the Van Hoevenberg trailhead, is a great first stop for conditions and gear advice. Weather changes fast above treeline — pack layers even in summer. Much of the alpine vegetation above treeline exists nowhere else in New York, so stay on marked trails and rock surfaces. Cell service is unreliable on most trails — tell someone your plan before you head out.

Base camp in the village

After a day on the trail, RetreatADK puts you two blocks from Main Street's restaurants and coffee shops — no need to drive back out for dinner. Every unit has a fully equipped kitchen if you'd rather refuel and relax, plus self check-in so a long trail day never means rushing back for a front-desk deadline.

On the Mountain

Whiteface Mountain Skiing Guide

Nine miles from RetreatADK in nearby Wilmington sits Whiteface — site of alpine skiing for the 1980 Winter Olympics, and still the biggest vertical drop east of the Rockies.

Big-mountain terrain

Whiteface skis big — a legitimate Eastern big-mountain experience, not a beginner hill, though there's terrain for every level. The Slides offer 35 acres of in-bounds, off-piste double-black-diamond terrain — natural, ungroomed, and genuinely challenging. The longest run, the Wilmington Trail, stretches 2.1 miles.

Village vs. mountain lodging

Most ski lodging clusters at the base in Wilmington. Staying in Lake Placid village instead means a ~15-minute drive to the lifts — worth it for walkable restaurants and bars after ski boots come off, plus the option of a non-ski day at Mt. Van Hoevenberg or Main Street without getting back in the car.

Check the trail map and conditions report the morning of your visit — conditions shift daily. Arrive early on weekends and holidays, and dress for a summit that runs colder and windier than the village.

Olympic Sports

Winter scene near Lake Placid

Bobsled, luge & skeleton

The combined sliding track dates back to the original 1932 Olympic run and is on the National Register of Historic Places — still one of the most technically demanding tracks in the world, regularly hosting World Cup events. Public bobsled ride experiences are typically available on the actual competition track; check seasonal availability before you plan your visit.

Frozen Mirror Lake with mountains behind

Biathlon, Nordic & mountain biking

A 30-point biathlon range and roughly 44 km of cross-country trails serve serious training and racing in winter, and recreational skiers too. In recent years, single-track mountain bike trails have brought the UCI Mountain Bike World Series to Lake Placid — 2026 marks the final season of the current multi-year contract, making this year a notable one to catch the racing.

It's not just winter sports and racing — the East and West summit trails also make Mt. Van Hoevenberg one of the easiest High Peaks-adjacent hikes in the area. See the hiking guide above for trail details.
